Dr. Jimmy Sparks, a Birmingham native, returned to his hometown after fulfilling his military commitment to join the faculty at UAB in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. While at UAB, Dr. Sparks’ research interest and publications centered on women’s preventive healthcare.
In 1991 Dr. Sparks left academic medicine to pursue his commitment to women’s health care in a private-practice setting. He has been on the medical staff at Brookwood Medical Center since 2000. His practice interests include da Vinci ® robotic surgery (including robotic hysterectomy, robotic myomectomy, and robotic endometriosis resection) as well as surgical treatment of urinary incontinence. As an early proponent of newer minimally-invasive procedures for gynecologic surgery, he continues to train other physicians in robotic hysterectomy and other robotic surgery techniques. Having an interest in evolving scientific knowledge regarding menopause care, Dr. Sparks has completed the North American Menopause’s Society’s practitioner certification process. He also continues to enjoy caring for expectant families, relying on his thirty years of experience delivering babies to support them in achieving the healthiest possible outcome for mother and newborn.
Dr. Sparks has been recognized by his colleagues as one of Alabama’s Best Doctors in America®continuously since 2002. Based on recognition from his patients, he received a Patient’s Choiceaward for compassionate care in 2012. After many years of service, he is currently a Life Counselor with the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. He has served as Secretary/Treasurer, Vice-Chair, and Chair of the Alabama Section, American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. In 2013, the Congress presented him with its Outstanding District Service Award.
