Real Stories: Abnous

Abnous speaks with us about cherishing their childhood, the best stuffy nose remedy, and undeniable appeal of heated toilet seats.

Q: Occupation/Interests/Hobbies:

A: I am an optometrist at Hoover Vision Center. When I am not working, I am a mommy to Cameron & Winn and a wife to James. I love photography, decorating, party planning, crafting and traveling, all of which I wish I had time to do more of!

Q: Who is your doctor and what made you decide to have your baby at Brookwood Baptist?

A: After having my daughter, I was on the search for a new doctor. I talked to several friends and neighbors and decided on Dr. Kennedy. I liked her immediately. She is amazing and really listened to my thoughts and concerns and worked with me to develop a birth plan that was right for me. It also didn’t hurt that the new Women’s Medical Center was opening right before I was due. Who doesn’t want a heated toilet seat in their bathroom?!

Q: What made you feel beautiful during your pregnancy?

A: Sometimes it’s hard to feel beautiful when your ankles are so swollen they don’t even exist and you can’t fit into anything pretty. But, just knowing that you have a precious life growing inside you makes you feel beautiful.

Q: What was your guilty pleasure during pregnancy?

A: I hate to be generic, but sweets. I have a sweet tooth even when I am not pregnant that just gets out of control when I’m pregnant. I tried to reign it in, but I definitely ate my fair share of desserts last year!

Q: What are your favorite memories of your children’s first days?

A: During your pregnancy, you get to know all their little kicks and hiccups in the womb and then they arrive and it’s just so amazing to see their little personalities come out. During those first few days together, I loved just holding them in my arms and memorizing every inch of their little beings.

Q: What’s the last thing you splurged on just for yourself?

A: I just got the new iPhone 5 and I love it! I love photography and the camera is absolutely amazing. It definitely comes in handy when you want to take pictures and videos of the kids on the go!

Q: How do you get through the “tough days” as a mom?

A: I try to look at the big picture and remember that this time with them is so fleeting. Soon they will be going to school and hanging out with their friends and wanting nothing to do with me! I have to really try to remind myself to cherish this time I have with them and not sweat the small stuff. But, sometimes it’s easier said than done!

Q: What’s your favorite date night spot?

A: We love sushi, so we frequent Jinsei in Homewood. We really like to try different restaurants, so when we do get a chance to go out we try to go somewhere new!

Q: There’s a lot of baby “gear” out there, what’s the one thing you couldn’t live without?

A: The Nosefrida! It’s so sad when your baby is sick and there’s nothing you can really do except give him extra cuddles. The Nosefrida runs circles around the old fashioned suction bulb in clearing their noses and helping them breathe. With a big sister in preschool, bringing home lots of germs, it has been a lifesaver!
